Mijn onderzoek richt zich op mens-natuurrelaties in ruimte en tijd. Ik bestudeer deze relaties op verschillende schalen en niveaus: van lokaal tot mondiaal, van het verleden tot de toekomst. Mijn studiesystemen omvatten onder andere eilanden, steden, agro-ecologische landschappen, continenten en soms de hele wereld.
Vragen die ik met mijn onderzoek probeer te beantwoorden zijn: wat is de relatieve bijdrage van menselijke- en milieuvariabelen aan biodiversiteitspatronen, en waarom vallen biodiversiteit en culturele diversiteit ruimtelijk samen?
Deze vragen zijn lastig vanuit één afzonderlijke discipline te beantwoorden. Daarom werk ik veel samen met mensen uit andere disciplines binnen de natuur-, sociale-, en geesteswetenschappen. In mijn onderzoek maak ik vaak gebruik van ruimtelijke analysemethoden zoals GIS, geocomputation, en mapping.
Met mijn onderzoek hoop ik bij te dragen aan een verschuiving van de eenzijdige focus op ‘menselijke invloed op biodiversiteit’ naar een meer genuanceerde relationele benadering genaamd ‘bioculturele geografie’.
